Manatee Appreciation Day: March 30, 2023

We all know that manatees have been starving to death at an alarming rate.  This is caused by excessive nutrients being poured into our waterways that flow into our bays and ocean, causing algae blooms which kill off sea grass.  Manatees are also known as sea cows and they need sea grass to eat.  The request for action is very simple.  Just click on the "TAKE ACTION" box and fill out the information to let our representatives in Congress know that you are concerned.  It's that easy!

Manatee Appreciation Day is this coming March 30th.  Please help our mantees.

We Must Protect Manatees

Sadly, 800 manatees in Florida died in 2022, and the major cause was starvation due to the loss of seagrass beds. More than 1,000 manatees died in 2021 alone, marking the deadliest year on record for manatees living in the warm coastal waters off Florida. In the past two years, more than 25% of Florida’s manatee population has died.

Manatee deaths are climbing, and it’s clear that this towering Floridian icon needs our help. To make matters worse, red tide and harmful algal blooms, which are dangerous to manatees, could increase as the year progresses. Will you take action now by asking the United States Department of Interior to put the manatee back on the endangered species list?

When a species is listed as endangered, the federal and local governments put measures and regulations in place that protect imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.

With voices like yours, we can work together to help protect one of the most beloved creatures of Florida and keep manatees around for generations to come.

LIGHTS OUT FOR BIRDS Migration!

May, 2023

While World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated on May 14, migrating birds are already arriving in Florida. Please turn off or dim non-essential lighting during this critical spring time migration period! Turning off lights dramatically reduces hazards from attraction to and disorientation by light, allowing birds to safely proceed with their migratory journeys. Furthermore, Lights Out does more than save birds, it saves energy and money!

I hope that you will join in the simple, easy to do program and help our feathered friends as they fly through our neighborhoods on their way to their spring homes.

THIS SUNDAY'S PLANTING FEBRUARY 12TH @ 10:00 AM

District 6990

  • This Sunday, Feb. 12th as of 10:00 AM, we will be planting two hundred and twenty six pollinator shrubs on Pelican Island. Please read ALL of the information below.

1.) Pelican Island is a man made island created as a result of the dredging of the Intercoastal Waterway in the 1900's. The island is only accessible by boat. Pelican Island is 400 yards away from Pelican Harbor Marina located at 1275 NE 79th St. This is on the NORTH side of 79th Street. Make a right turn (north) at the first traffic light at the very beginning of the 79th Street Causeway in the east bound direction toward Miami Beach.

2.) We will use Park's catamaran to reach the island, it is less than a five minute boat ride. The catamaran, "Pelican Skipper", will shuttle volunteers back and forth from the island.

3.) There will be directional signs (Rotary Lawn Signs) indicating the way from 79th Street, to the parking area within Pelican Harbor Marina, and to the pier where the catamaran will be docked. (Photo of the Rotary directional signs is below)

4.) Please note that the parking at Pelican Harbor Marina parking requires "Pay by Phone". Please prepay your parking to avoid a ticket. Should the Pelican Harbor Marina parking be full, there is ample parking on the south side of 79th Street at Pelican Marina.

5.) PLEASE NOTE: there are NO RESTROOMS on the island (no fresh water nor electricity). There is a restroom on the catamaran and there a plenty of restroom facilities a short five minute catamaran trip away to Pelican Harbor Marina. (Suggestion: Use the restrooms at the Pelican Harbor Marina before heading to the catamaran.) Once you are on the island, the catamaran will be available to shuttle anyone to the harbor and back to the island.

6.) We will start the event as of 10:00 AM

7.) For those who want to enjoy the BBQ, it will start around 11:30 AM. The cost is $10/person, children under seven are free, for those who wish to partake in the BBQ. Please bring CASH, PREFERABLY $10 BILLS, NO CREDIT CARDS. We will also have water, juices, sodas and snacks for all at no charge throughout the day. At the BBQ we will have hot dogs (Hebrew National), hamburgers and veggieburgers. We will also have baked beans (Bush's Vegetarian) (u), coleslaw and potato salad. Cookies for dessert.

8.) PLEASE RSVP FOR THE BBQ RIGHT AWAY. WE WANT TO HAVE SUFFICIENT FOOD FOR EVERYONE

    9) We will also have an island cleanup along it's coastline and within the island. Please bring your grabbers, if you have them. Along the coastline many plastic bottle caps and other materials have washed up from the bay, and within the island we will find other litter to pick up. Let's leave Pelican Island cleaner than we find. Leave nothing, but our footprints.

10.) If you choose to enter the water, please be very careful. There is a sudden drop off beyond the shoreline as the area has been dredged. Please keep an eye on your children, as they may be tempted to enter the water. Additionally, please do not swim out into the water as unfortunately boaters often speed around. We do not want anyone to have an unexpected encounter with a watercraft.

11.) On the island there is a volleyball court. A brand new volleyball will be available for the young and young at heart volunteers who wish to play.

12.) Students who wish to earn Community Service Hours, please fill out the form upon arrival to the island. PRINT LEGIBLY, PLEASE.

13.) Million Trees Miami will provide the shovels and other equipment. There is no need to take anything else, other than appropriate clothing, a hat, suntan lotion and similar items.

    14) Should you need any assistance reaching the locale or have any questions, please call me at: 305.733.3704

Looking forward to seeing many of you at this event. Please remember to RSVP.
